Windshield Wipers

Introduction to Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are part of a vehicle’s standard equipment and they can be found on all vehicles, no matter the make or the model.

Although it might not seem like it, windshield wipers are a very important part of any vehicle, because they help drivers see in bad weather conditions.  Also, they keep the windshield clean and aesthetically pleasing.  Owing to the fact that most decisions while driving are made based on vision, it can easily be seen how important windshield wipers are to drivers.

History of Windshield Wipers

The first windshield wipers were invented in the beginning of the 20th century by a woman called Mary Anderson, but amazingly enough, she was not able to sell the patent to any of the car companies at the time because none of the car companies were interested in this kind of device.  After this, in 1916, the first windshield wipers were introduced to the market and they were manually operated by the driver.  It was not until five years later that the automatic windshield wipers were invented, and these were powered by vacuum from the engine.  Finally, in 1926, electric windshield wipers were invented by Bosch and they have been used ever since, evolving throughout the century.

Types of Windshield Wipers

Today, there are many different types of wipers and things that are made to improve their efficiency.  Here is a list of some of the most used types of windshield wipers:

  • Winter – these are standard wipers, but made out of stronger rubber in order to be able to protect the windshield from ice and snow, which can seriously affect the field of vision during the winter months.
  • Heated – heated wipers are used during the cold months, just like the winter wipers, with the main difference of having the ability to heat thus making it easier to get rid of the ice and snow.
  • Silicone – silicone is a type of rubber resistant to water, oil, hot and cold weather and it is used because of this to produce efficient wiper blades.
  • Contour – many vehicles cannot use standard wipers because of the fact that they have a curved windshield, and these vehicles have to be fitted with contour wipers which adjust the curvature of the windshield.
  • Teflon – a lot of wiper manufacturers use Teflon or similar products combined with the rubber in the wiper blades, because it is believed that this gives the blade a chance to last for a longer time and also help the windshield be water-resistant and slick.
  • Shaker – the shaker is an attachment that is added to any wiper in order to give it the ability to vibrate, which helps when the wiper needs to clean the windshield from ice and snow.

In conclusion, it can be said that windshield wipers are one of the most important parts of a vehicle’s equipment and that, despite the fact that most people do not pay much attention to this, they are really helpful when it comes to keeping the windshield clean and ensuring that visibility levels are as high as possible.
